Katherine Schipper

Katherine Schipper is a member of the Memorial High School Class of 1967. She was one of four National Merit Semi - Finalists in her graduating class, and was very active in extra - curricular activities beyond her academic studies.


In 1971, she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature from the University of Dayton. She then attended the University of Chicago, where she earned a Masters in Business Administration in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree in Library Science in 1975. Katherine earned a Doctorate degree in Accounting from the University of Chicago in 1977.


Dr. Schipper has enjoyed a distinguished career as a university accounting professor and researcher. She served on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University in the Graduate School of Industrial Management from 1976 until 1983. In 1983, Katherine returned to the University of Chicago to serve on its faculty until 1999. In 1999, Katherine Schipper joined the faculty at Duke University. She is currently the Thomas F. Keller Professor of Accounting at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.


In 1999, Schipper received the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award from the American Accounting Association. Katherine has supervised many doctoral dissertations and has taught doctoral seminars at universities in countries throughout the world, including China, Australia, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. She has also taught in the Master of Business Administration program at the Goethe Business School at the University of Frankfurt in Germany. Schipper has also been active in executive education programs including those offered by the New York Stock Exchange, Deutsche Bank, Columbia University, and Stanford University. She has authored and co - authored many articles in scholarly journals. For many years, she was the Editor of the Journal of Accounting Research at the University of Chicago.


From 2001 until 2006, Katherine served on the Financial Accounting Standards Board, which sets the standards for the entire accounting profession. Katherine Schipper is a widely respected empirical researcher who brings her research into the reality of accounting practice. She has served as President of the American Accounting Association. In 1996, she received an honorary degree from the University of Notre Dame. She also holds honorary degrees from the Norwegian School of Economics, the Stockholm School of Economics, and the Singapore Management University. In 2007, Katherine Schipper was inducted as the eighty-first, and first female, member of the Accounting Hall of Fame.



For excellence in her profession, and being a widely respected expert in her field, the St. Marys Memorial High School Alumni Foundation inducts Katherine Schipper into the St. Marys Memorial High School Alumni Foundation Hall of Fame for Academic and Professional Achievement.
